In his review of the film, Times critic Justin Chang called it “a swirling, dazzling, maddening frenzy of disconnected sights and sounds.” His final feature, the 85-minute nonfiction “The Image Book,” premiered at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, where Godard was awarded the fest’s first Special Palme d’Or. His later films included “Goodbye to Language,” a fragmented film in 3D about a young couple who communicate through their pet dog. And, Sterritt said, “what some consider his magnum opus, the crowning achievement of his career,” is Godard’s “Histoire(s) du Cinéma,” a multisegment video work launched in 1989. In recent decades, Godard worked in both film and video. Yet such quick, easy definitions don’t fully convey their talent or the importance of the rules they set. The City Girls, Girl Code, and actual girl code all seem easily understandable at face value – the duo rock their feelings like their Birkens, for all to see, and the code can be shallowly defined as sisterhood. She basically loses the beat at one point on “Act Up”, but such double entendres as “ I ain’t comin’ if you cum quick” solidify the code she and JT live by. But as mentioned before, the album’s layers reveal themselves with time, and Yung Miami’s talents bubble up with repeated listens. “Give it a Try” questions her love interest on his feelings towards her in moments self-effacing honesty towards the “ hoe me.” “ On IG, half-naked, like it, scroll me/ But tell me what you gon’ do when it’s time to hold me.” After many a verse critiquing other hoes, JT turns it on herself and, in doing so, on her man as well. For all of the album’s taunts and threats, JT conveys a few surprising heartfelt moments as well. On the surface, the star of Girl Code is JT, delivering bars while stuck behind different kinds of bars. Meanwhile, the unfortunately dull “What We Doin’” answers its own question, “ Party all night, where we goin’ what we doin’.” A good answer to that might be to stop being homophobic in your lyrics and your interviews. “Season” delivers a brilliant hook only to hammer it home far too many times. Repetition, among other things, proves a problem where clever lines often get beaten into meaninglessness. “ Chanel fur, no top/ Rockin’ the Birken bag” is a mantra anyone can envision but not necessarily manifest for themselves the City Girls can however, and letting you know this is no different than Bey’s “ Best revenge is your paper.” Indeed, more low-key tracks take the center stage, carried by subtle beats more akin to DJ Mustard’s subdued hustle or Future’s flute-flouting soundscapes.Įach track, whether upbeat or trap-oriented, comes laced with the addictive hooks that make the band’s songs earworms in the first place. The album produces no “Period,” “I’ll Take Your Man” or “Where the Bag At” – the closest to such immediate bangers would be the Cardi-assisted “Twerk.” Even looking at the album’s cover suggests a subdued affair. Though it lacks the overt punch of Period, Girl Code still resounds with the young talent and Southern romp that put City Girls on the map. Strictly committed to the grind and each other, Jatavia Johnson (JT) and Caresha Brownlee (Yung Miami) rally against detractors, fuckboys and the “hoes” as only close friends can. The concept of “girl code” comes with an understanding of loyalty, a quality the City Girls possess in abundance.
